Zambia..the real Africa

Zambia is a landlocked country in the sub-Saharan Africa  and has a population of about 12 million.

There are 72 different tribes all living in peace and harmony. The official language spoken is English and most urban Zambians speak it very well.

Zambia’s spectacular attraction is the Victoria Falls with a curtain of water falling 110 meters deep, locally known as Mosi-oa-tunya. Literary interpreted it means the ‘smoke that thunders’, due to its thundering water that sprays the mist high up into the sky, making it look like smoke.

Zambia also boasts of splendid national parks with a wide variety of wildlife. You can see all of Zambia’s plains game apart from predators in the nearby Mosi-oa-tunya national park. There are also many heritage sites to visit  in Livingstone town.

There are walking and driving safaris locally into the Mosi-oa-tunya Game Park, where you can see white rhino at close quarters, plenty giraffe and many other animals. There are over 450 species of bird recorded in this region.

Safaris can also be arranged into the Chobe National Park in Botswana well known for its huge populations of elephants.

Safaris to most parks in Zambia can be arranged by the Lodge/Guesthouse you are booked at. The well known Luangwa National Park in the north-east, the lower Zambezi National Park in the South where one can come into close view of lions and elephants.

Zambia has great weather throughout the year.  The Victoria Falls should be seen at different times of the year as the amount of water varies greatly. Even in the dry season it is a sight to behold.

  • spring;
    hot and wet (Dec – April), Quick downpours and mostly sunny. The rainy season brings more water to the Falls.
  • winter;
    cool and dry (May – August)   winter temperatures are approximately 20 degrees Celsius during the day. Nights can be quite cold. The Falls are full from the rainy seaon.
  • summer;
    hot and dry (Sept – November). October is particularly hot. Summer temperatures average around 26-30 degrees Celsius. Very good times for fishing and animals congregate along rivers as the dry season comes to an end. The Falls are low at this time after the dry season but good for taking walks along the lip for different views and to reach the Devils Pool.

It is advisable to use strong sunscreen and a shady hat for protection from hot African sun in any season.
